Provincetown’s Herring Cove Once Called New Beach

The New Beach, Provincetown Postcard 1940s

Today this beach is known as “Herring Cove”,  but during the mid 20th century it was called “New Beach”.  The name came from the new Masachussets state highway constructed in the 1920’s, which provided easy access to the beach at the tip of Cape Cod. With hundreds of parking spaces, two bathhouses, and a snack bar— by the 1950s New Beach was a popular tourist attraction to visitors who wanted to enjoy a swim, regardless of the tide schedule.

In 1962 the National Park Service took over ownership and management of this popular beach and renamed it Herring Cove– the original name of the shoreline popular with fisherman. Beach grass was planted to try and slow erosion, but it’s been a losing battle.   Wave action, rising seas, and shifting sands have created havoc with the parking area of this beach long popular with nature lovers and nudists who have enjoyed the solitude afforded by the expansive dune landscape. Certainly the characters in Remaining in Provincetown frequent Herring Cove Beach a beautiful spot for watching the sunset.  It might even be a spot to hide a murder weapon or to bid a last good-bye.  Haven’t read the mystery novel Remaining in Provincetown by S.N. Corn Hill Cottages in Truro Near Provincetown Book Action

What a great view at sunset, high atop Corn Hill in Truro, you can look down on Cape Cod Bay and the Pamet River.  The site of Corn Hill is famous, because this is the location where a search party from The Mayflower while docked in Provincetown Harbor found the Indian’s winter stash of corn (November 15, 1620). There is a monument marker that tells the story at the base of the hill and at the top of the hill, are what were once the original  Corn Hill Cottages as shown in this postcard, built in 1900.  Originally there were two rows of cottages, but a fire in 1937  destroyed the lower row of cottages and they were never rebuilt. A great deal of modernization as taken place to the entire area with the addition of luxury homes that populate the once rustic area, but look closely if you take a walk in the area and you can get a glimpse of the older architecture.

Not too far from Provincetown, Corn Hill Beach and the Pamet are near some of the action takes place in the sequel to the murder mystery Remaining in Provincetown by S.N. Provincetown or Truro; Bayside Cottages Popular Retreat

The postcard was posted in 1939 as the country was recovering from The Great Depression two years before the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the United State’s entry into World War II. Cape Cod was a popular getaway spot and the bevy of cottages that dotted the edge of Route 6A in North Truro as one approaches the east end of Provincetown are evidence of that fact. Many were built during the first decades of the 20th century and gradually they are becoming condominium.

In the sequel murder mystery to Remaining in Provincetown, some of the summer visitors are staying in cottages in Truro.  Is that where a crime takes place? You’ll have to read the book to find out,  when it is released. While you are waiting, if you haven’t read the first book, now is the time to  pick up a copy of Remaining in Provincetown by S.N. Truro landmarks Town Hall and Church Attract Provincetown Tourists

At one time, there were so many downed vessels off the coast near the town we now know as Truro, it was known as Dangerfield.  The name Truro was borrowed from a Cornish town that looks similar– the rolling hills and small village.  There is plenty of danger taking place in the sequel to the popular mystery Remaining in Provincetown by S.N. Cook.  Set in Truro during the summer, the landmarks of Truro figure prominently in the story line.  Haven’t read Remaining in Provincetown yet? The antique postcard shown in this blog post, shows Truro Town Hall and  Federated Church on Storm Hill in Truro.  The cemetery has tombstones dating back to the 1700s. A color lithograph print, the card was published when it only cost one penny to mail a postcard in the United States.

Ballston Beach Truro and the Cape Cod Ocean

Surf bathing at Ballston Beach in Truro is still a favorite way to cool off on a hot day. If not for the sailing ships in the background, this could be a 2lst century scene, but this antique postcard was printed around 1900.   The closest and easily accessible ocean beach near Truro Center and the Pamet it is a favorite spot of the characters in the sequel novel to Remaining in Provincetown.  Where does this beach get its name? I”m not sure, if anyone does know, please share. As the summer progresses so does the story. Truro Center Cape Cod Retreat from Provincetown

Ever wonder what Truro Town center looked like before the current small shopping center with Jams, Mac’s Seafood Market Market, and The Truro Post Office was built?  Well here is an antique post card from the time when it only cost one penny to mail. (Two cents to mail to Cuba, Canada, or Mexico).  Yes, this postcard was printed when Americans like Ernest Hemingway frequently traveled back and forth to Cuba. Also shown is the Cobb Memorial Library, a lovely historic building that has been replaced by the large Truro Public Library on Standish Way. Truro has always been a rural hamlet, a place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of Provincetown. What happens when a mysterious death takes place at the height of summer? Readers of Remaining in Provincetown are patiently waiting for the release of book # 2, primarily set in Truro.  Haven’t read Remaining in Provincetown yet??? Castle Road in Truro and Sladesville Inspire Provincetown Artists and Writers

Sladeseville, Truro, Cape Cod, Mass.

At the time this postcard was published, the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill had not yet been founded and there were fewer houses along  Castle Road, but the title of this  postcard is Sladesville and that is the focus of this picture.  Probably printed just before The Great Depression, this illustration captures the beauty of the Pamet and the Cape Cod Bay and even throws in a sunset.  Its not too far from this spot, that much of the story of the sequel to Remaining in Provincetown takes place.  The characters often drive along Caste Road and the group of rental cottages that were built in 1925 by artist C. Arnold Slade.

So who was C. Arnold Slade? A Massachusetts native and graduate of Brown University, Slade studied at the  Art Student’s League in New York City under Louis Loeb and Frank Dumond. He also studied in Paris and enjoyed early success as an artist. According to art historian Julie Carlson Eldred, Slade first spent  a winter in Truro in 1914, and summered there sporadically from 1920. In 1925  he purchased Truro’s first Methodist meeting house, built in 1826, and had it dismantled and reconstructed on what was known at the time as  “Savage Point”. The former church was used to build a structure that served as both a studio and an exhibition space.  If you go to “Sladesville” today, no longer owned by the Slade family, you will  also see a red house, where the Slades lived, which was called Roselea.   During the 1930s and 40s C. Arnold Slade enjoyed a successful career as a portrait painter and painted the likenesses of many dignitaries.  He died in 1961.

Truro Pamet River Inspires Second “Remaining in Provincetown” Mystery Series

At the time this postcard was printed and mailed, there was still a train that traveled the length of Cape Cod, all the way to Provincetown.  While Provincetown quickly became a bustling and densely populated settlement, Truro has remained primarily rural.  One of its fine features are the expansive sand dunes, marshes, and the Pamet River, shown in the above postcard.

As the sequel to the mystery novel, “Remaining in Provincetown” opens, Len Milbury is going for a run from the Truro Town Center Post Office to Ballston Beach on the road that runs parallel to The Pamet River.  In his backpack he carries a letter.  Is it a clue?

While the book’s title has not been finalized,  there is another book that follows “Remaining in Provincetown”.  In it you”ll get a chance to read more about the the lives and adventures of Frank Chambers and Roz Silva. This beautiful hand colored postcard features a typical shingled Cape Cod cottage from the 19th century complete with out buildings and garden.   There are still many lovely old homes to admire driving along Highland Road towards Highland Lighthouse in North Truro. The flowers tell you it must be summertime and that is the time of year for the sequel to the popular mystery novel Remaining in Provincetown by S. N. Cape Cod Fishnet Industries in North Truro

This old glossy postcard from the 1960s show Tiny Worthington’s store Fishnet Industries and the caption on the postcard states it was open year round back in the days when telephones were managed by live operators and the phone number was “Provincetown 834”.  Advertised as “The only shop of its kind” the establishment provided year-round employment.  Thirty-five years ago, Truro in the summertime was not very different from Truro in 2015. But what happens when someone is found dead in a beautiful home with an idyllic view of the Pamet River.  Who is going to solve the mystery? Fans of Remaining in Provincetown will be please to know that a sequel has been written.  Currently being edited and reviewed, we’ll keep posting old postcards for your viewing pleasure.  Haven’t read the first book yet?  There’s still time during the cold winter months on Cape Cod.  Currently available online and at your favorite bookstores including the Provincetown Bookshop.
